Structured Databases/Data Management continued driving the largest share of enterprise IT infrastructure spending in the second half of 2022 (2H22), according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Semiannual Enterprise Infrastructure Tracker: Workloads. Organizations spent $7.6 billion on compute and storage hardware infrastructure to support this workload in 2H22, which represents 9.1% of the market total. Year-to-year (YoY) growth was relatively low compared to other workloads with a 6.5% increase in value compared to 2H21. Unstructured Database and HR/Human Capital Management (HCM) saw the highest YoY growth in hardware infrastructure demand with spending growing at 36.7% and 35.4% respectively from 2H21. However, these are also the second and fourth smallest workloads regarding consumption of compute and storage infrastructure, respectively, with Unstructured Database accounting for $2.4 billion in spending, while HR/Human Capital Management (HCM) accounting for $2.7 billion in spending.

IT market performance remained patchy in April, with some vendors and resellers experiencing a sharp decline in growth while others continued to benefit from long-term enterprise commitment to cloud, digital transformation and security investments. In its latest monthly forecast for Worldwide IT Spending Growth, IDC forecasts overall growth this year in constant currency of 4.8% to $3.27 trillion, a slight improvement on last month’s forecast which reflects resilient IT services market performance.

Worldwide smartphone shipments declined 14.6% year over year to 268.6 million units in the first quarter of 2023 (1Q23), according to preliminary data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. This marks the seventh consecutive quarter of decline as the market continues to struggle with lukewarm demand, inflation, and macro uncertainties. The forecast also shows that BDA spending will gain strength over the next five years as the global economy recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for global BDA spending over the 2021-2025 forecast period will be 12.8%.

Worldwide revenues for the artificial intelligence (AI) market, including software, hardware, and services, is estimated to grow 15.2% year over year in 2021 to $341.8 billion, according to the latest release of the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Semiannual Artificial Intelligence Tracker. The market is forecast to accelerate further in 2022 with 18.8% growth and remain on track to break the $500 billion mark by 2024. Among the three technology categories, AI Software occupied 88% of the overall AI market. However, in terms of growth, AI Hardware is estimated to grow the fastest in the next several years. From 2023 onwards, AI Services is forecast to become the fastest growing category.

For example, IDC observed that the roles and responsibilities of developers continue to expand. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Enterprise Storage Systems Tracker, global market revenue for enterprise external OEM storage systems grew 1.7% year over year to $6.7 billion during the first quarter of 2021 (1Q21). This trend is expected to continue into 2022, when year-over-year growth will be 3.8% with shipments totaling 1.43 billion.
